The Truth About Breast Implants
By Janice Wee
True or false?
- Breast implants are a one time procedure. They'll last an entire life time.
- Breast augmentation is a minor procedure.
- Breast implants are 100% safe.
All these statements are a pack of lies. Take the first statement, about this being a one time procedure.
Many women think that once the implant is in, you can leave it there and forget about it. Nothing is further than the truth.
- Breast implants do NOT last forever. After 13 to 15 years, the incidence of rupture is 85%. Meaning, you can expect to change implants a few times in your lifetime.
- Even if the operation goes well, the final result might not be what you want. In fact within the first 3 years of having the breast augmentation surgery, 13% to 21% of the women have a redo surgery.
- You need maintenance. Get them checked to make sure they're still good. You'd need maintenance in 10 to 15 years from the time you get the implants inserted. Worn out implants must be replaced.
As for breast augmentation being a minor procedure, I suggest you sit in on one such breast augmentation surgery as an onlooker and gauge for yourself whether it is minor or not. For the record, most women who had that surgery liken the post surgery pain to being as bad being hit by a truck. A mom who had gone through previous surgeries as well as labour thought it would be a cinch but the pain on day one, when she awoke from the surgery, was so bad, she thought she had crippled herself. Anyway, if you do go for breast augmentation, be prepared for the pain once the anaesthetic wears off.
The worse lie is that breast implants are 100% safe. Here's the list of possible complications with breast enhancement surgery. In the first place, no surgery is 100% safe. There is always an element of risk. For breast implants surgery, the risks include.
- Infection - a risk with every surgery.
- Reaction to the anaesthesia - also a risk with every surgery.
- Capsule contracture - Your body forms a capsule around the implant. This fibrous tissue, in normal cases, the pocket made for the implant should stay open. When capsular contrature occurs, the capsule tightens and squeezes the implant, leaving the breast hard, painful and fake-looking.
- Necrosis, or tissue death, though not a common complication is possible. If it happens, the dead tissue forms around the implant and can prevent wound healing. In some cases, the implant has to be removed.
- Permanent loss of nipple sensation can oocur after surgery. It happens for 10% to 18% of the women with breast implants
- Implant deflation - about 4% of the implants deflate in the first year, with 1% per year in the following years.
- Hematoma - Considering breast surgery is done for its cosmetic effect, hematoma is one of the awful complications that can come with breast augmentation. Basically, the blood leaks out of the vessels and pools in the skin tissue, leading to a huge, ugly blood clot that can be painful.
With all these possible complications of breast implants, do you still want to go for it?
There are other ways of getting bigger breasts without surgery. If you just want cleavage for that special night out, you can always wear a padded bra. The liquid-filled bras are particularly realistic.
If you want your breasts to be bigger permanently, try natural breast enhancement. Sure, it takes time, but the results are worth it, plus, you avoid the risks that come with surgery.
